B.   BY ANALOGY OR INFERENCE

Jesus was the first born step son of a Jewish carpenter by trade.  It was not given in scriptures what happened to Joseph after Jesus was age 12.  Jesus probably, like most young Jewish boys inherited Joseph’s carpentry business.  Therefore, until the age of 30 when he began his public ministry, it is believed that Jesus probably plied his trade as a carpenter in his own business.  Matt. 13:55...”Is not this the carpenter’s son?”

II.                 REASON FOR JESUS’ EXAMPLE

2 COR. 8:9  For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

Poor – 4433 -  beggar, indigent

Rich – 4147 – become wealthy, (lit or fig), be increased with goods, (be made, wax) rich.

            B.  Deut. 26:12  When thou hast made an end of tithing...giving unto the Levite, etc.

III.       WHAT THE TITHE DOES..Prov. 3:5-10....Honor the Lord with thy substance...

You only honor the Lord in three ways:

1.  presence, Isa:58:13

                        2.  worship Ps:66:2, Ps:71:8

                        3.  tithe,  Prov. 3:5-10....

IV.       ARTICLE stated that  3% of discretionary income is tithed...WOW!  No wonder there is such a problem with finances these days... Discretionary income is not gross income,  but that amount of income that is left over that you judge to spend as you see fit.  There are 2 million personal bankruptcies projected to the year 2000.  Evangelical churches need to get up to speed if we are going to evangelize the world.

V.        PROMISE IN TITHING-  Mal. 3:8-12....bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,

POVERTY, MAMMON, POWER

I.   PRESENT PROBLEMS

A.  A recent survey of 1569 homes # 1 greatest need  -  money.  The # 2 greatest need - jobs

B.  Personal bankruptcies in America - 1996 over1.24 million - up 35 percent from 918,964 in 1995. tripled since 1981, projection is over 2 million in  the year 2000.

C.

And the most electrifying survey states that 95% of people in America retire on poverty income.

II.      SPIRIT OF POVERTY

     A.   Col 2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit …  The truth is that poverty is neither pious nor holy, but rather a curse, a trial, or an out and out attack of the devil.

     B.    Deut 28:15-58  Curses

     C.    Deut 8:3  And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, …Test or trial

     D.   Job 1:8,9  An attack of the devil

The definition of poverty from the Hebrew word MAGHCOWR is deficiency, impoverishment, lack, need, penury, poor, want.

     E.  Proverbs 13:18  Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction.  Just ask a poor man one day if he enjoys being poor.

     F.    How many friends does a poor man have?

1.         Good Samaritan in Luke 10:29-36. the priest and the levite

2.         Proverbs 19:7. All the brethren of the poor do hate him:  how much more do his friends

3.         Proverbs 19:4, "Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor. Proverbs 14:20, "The poor is hated even of his neighbor, but the rich hath many friends."

     G.   Proverbs 28:6, "better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich."  Now this is not an argument for the producing of holiness in a man through poverty.

     H.   Being poor neither makes one wise or long remembered.  Ecclesiastes 9:13-18

Being poor and living in poverty does not supply your needs much less your wants; it does not produce holiness, piousness, righteousness, uprightness; it does not make one wise or remembered; it produces no friends; and worst of all it is also a curse from God for all who disobey his word.

     I.     The rich, too, can have a spirit of poverty. You have reached the ceiling in your earnings' potential.  Likely, you have a poverty mentality and can't cross that earnings threshold.  Remember the definition of poverty includes the words deficiency, need or want.  It does not just mean penury or poor

Proverbs 10:22, "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it."

III.         THE SPIRIT OF MAMMON

Mammon – Mammonas Gr. - wealth personified and avarice deified.  The definition puts money on the same plane as a spirit.  Though money is a physical attribute having neither soul nor body, it does have a spirit behind it that affects all men rich or poor.  Ephesians 6:12 says, "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."  In 1 Corinthians 10:17-20, we see that things offered in sacrifice to an idol is actually sacrificed to the devil behind the idol, as the idol is nothing in itself.  So we see that spirits are behind many things that affect us in life and by analogy we surmise that as money is nothing, it is the spirit behind money that we have to overcome.  Rich men and poor men alike have come under the spell of mammon from time to time.

V.      SYNOPSIS

     A. First, seek the kingdom of God.  God will then add to us.  Second, begin to build the physical house, i.e. the church proper.  Third, we must get our heart right towards God through repentance from sin and worldliness.  Fourth, a heart that is right has right actions.  Literally clean up your house, your tabernacle of flesh (your body) from sin, unclean thoughts, unclean actions, etc. , begin to honor God on his day.  Fifth, bring your tithes and offerings into the house of God that he will have meat in his house for the Levites (God’s ministers at the altar).  This is the link between God and man; His delegated authority, the minister,  whom if we honor and respect and support in the ministry (those who watch over our souls and those that minister the word to us), then God will have respect toward us and bless us.  If we accept and honor these men, then the analogy is that we accept and honor God.  If we reject these men, then we reject God.  Matt. 10:40, “He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.”
