THE GREAT WHORE OF BABYLON

The book of Revelation has always been a mysterious book and exceedingly hard to interpret.  Many have tried, but have only scratched the surface, or made a bad carnal interpretation of it.  This book can only be spiritually discerned, and no amount of education can get you there.  This subject has caused multitudes to write and speculate who the mystery whore of Babylon is or is not.  I pray this will help you gain a little more insight to one of the most awesome books in the Bible, God’s signature work for the ages.  And for the Bible scholars out there, I pray this will provoke you to love and good works.

The Great Whore of Babylon

Revelation 17:1  And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.  3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.  4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:  5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.

Babylon founders go all the way back to the account in Genesis where Nimrod was supposed to have built the Tower of Babel to  ascend into heaven to overthrow the throne of God.  So from early on, this has not been God’s favorite city.  Babylon, itself became one of the largest known cities of the world, having a population of over 200,000 in the years of its founding between 1894- 2234 BC depending whose records you look at in ancient Mesopotamia.   It is located on the Euphrates River approximately 53 miles South of Baghdad in modern day Iraq.  After many conquests of ancient kings, Babylon having been known for one of the seven wonders of the world, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and is now only a large mound of ruins and is only an archaeological Tell.  In Greek possessions, it was known as the gateway of God.  In truth, it was not the gateway of the true God, but of at least 31 heathen gods such as the gods of the sun, the sky, gods of war, gods of love and fertility, gods of medicine, gods of agriculture, and many more.  By and large, Babylon was known for its great luxury, sensuality, vice and corruption, and was a place of captivity and exile.  Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq, tried to rebuild ancient Babylon seeing himself as a modern day Nebuchadnezzer.  After his nemesis, American troops built military installations on the site and have largely destroyed any of the old archaeological digs.  Babylon, from its splendor of ancient days has ceased to exist as a world renown city with religious, merchant, and political influence.  So with this brief overview, we begin our look at the scriptures concerning this great city tabbed as Mystery Babylon The Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the Earth. 

First, let’s make a point that everyone can understand.  In the word of God, there is always good versus evil, God versus the devil, righteousness versus unrighteousness.  We find the triumvirate God recognized as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and we find the triumvirate devil recognized as the Beast, the antichrist, and the false prophet.  In Revelation 21, the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven is prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  This is the same bride recognized in Ephesians as Christ and his church (his bride).  This is the true city of God made up of God’s redeemed from off the earth.  With this analogy, we know that for every true and good thing, there is a counterfeit.  Moses came in the power of God doing miracles in the name of the Lord, but Pharaoh’s magicians did counterfeit miracles in the name of their god.  Therefore, just as the true city of God is known as New Jerusalem, so is the counterfeit known as Mystery Babylon.  And as the city of God, New Jerusalem is made up of God’s redeemed, the city of the unholy one, Mystery Babylon is made up of the devil’s converts.  This is not a stretch for those who are spiritually in tune.  So from this point, let’s not look at Mystery Babylon as being the Roman Catholic Church, the nation of Islam, or any other religion.  Look at it as spiritual city, the great whore who sits on many waters, made up of peoples, multitudes, and nations, and tongues upon the earth.  We can see then that our battle is not with a certain religion, but multitudes of people all over the earth who sit on the beast also known as the spirit of the antichrist.  These are diametrically opposed to all that the sons of God are proponents of.  And we see it in every facet of life, ecumenical religion, politics (government), merchants (economy), family, education, arts and media which are all the seven heads of the earth which are the seven mountains on which the woman sits that are the seven societal mountains that effect our everyday life.  The antichrist spirit effectively control these areas and has since Adam and Eve.  It is the same kingdoms (mountains) of this world that the devil offered Jesus in the wilderness after he had fasted for 40 days. 

Now, a whore is one who has prostituted herself, lain with many lovers, received pay for her services, or worse yet, paid to be lain with, which is utmost perversion.  Her feet won’t stay under her table, and her sheets are always cleaned and ready to turn back for her next guest.  The wayward woman beguiles the young man to come into her chambers as her husband is gone on a long journey, and her vows have been paid.  To the man seduced by her wiles, that makes everything alright.  Why, she has paid her money, her tithes and offerings, and is very religious, therefore whatever she has to offer is ok.  She has a deal with God.  Silly man!  Little does he know that everyone that goes into her that his next steps will go down to Sheol. 

And then we have Mystery Babylon.  What a mystery!  Now a mystery is a religious truth that one can only know by revelation but cannot fully understand.  It is profound, inexplicable, or a secretive quality or character.  It is not something that someone can fully understand  as a secret religious rite believed as in Eleusinian and Mithraic cults to impart enduring bliss to the initiate.  David Ulansey who wrote The Origins of the Mithraic Mysteries: Cosmology and Salvation in the Ancient World said “The ancient Roman religion known as the Mithraic mysteries has captivated the imaginations of scholars for generations. There are two reasons for this fascination. First, like the other ancient "mystery religions," such as the Eleusinian mysteries and the mysteries of Isis, Mithraism maintained strict secrecy about its teachings and practices, revealing them only to initiates. As a result, reconstructing the beliefs of the Mithraic devotees has posed an enormously intriguing challenge to scholarly ingenuity. Second, Mithraism arose in the Mediterranean world at exactly the same time as did Christianity, and thus the study of the cult holds the promise of shedding vital light on the cultural dynamics that led to the rise of Christianity.”  It is a cult devoted to such rites, something not understood or beyond understanding as an enigma, it is a private secret or specialized practices or ritual peculiar to an occupation or a body of people such as the Masons which is pervaded by mysteries and whose secrets are only divulged to their initiates as they go up the ladder of illumination.  But, we could say this about many Christian religions that have formed in the last 2000 years.  They all have their secrets and mysteries that are not apparent to those on the outside.  Mystery Babylon holds secrets like the mythical story of Pandora whose name means gifted, well endowed, all giving and was the first so called human formed by the gods who created her by giving her seductive gifts.  As the story goes, she opened a box later called Pandora’s Box which unleashed all manner of evils on humanity, and plagues and diseases upon the world, and only stopped when she closed the box.  So it is with Mystery Babylon, she has many curious souls wanting to peer into the “box” of religion not knowing that as soon as they look into the abominations inside that they unleash all manner of destructive behaviors upon the unsuspecting and the beguiled.  Before they know it, they have been seduced, and can’t go back.  And, so it is with all mysterious religions.  You have been asking the question, “Isn’t the Bible a mysterious book?”  Of course, it is.  But, there is a stark difference.  The disciples asked Jesus why he spoke in parables which were very mysterious.  Jesus said, “It is given to you to know the mystery of the Kingdom, but to them it is not given”, meaning the world in their carnal understanding could not get it.  Men look into mystery religions with their carnal minds and get carnal understanding and are seduced by carnal doctrines.  God gives the believer his spirit which then gives understanding into his mysterious kingdom.  For the things of God can only be understood by the spirit within a man.  A carnal interpretation of the word of God produces the myriads of religions we have today.  In fact, some religions have a multitude of gods, and yes some millions.  Even the so called Saints of old are venerated and adored as if they had attained to god status.  And many are prayed to which is strictly prohibited by scripture.  And so it is with Mystery Babylon.  This ancient religion is still at work today seducing, manipulating, beguiling, lying, and desecrating the true temple of God by destroying the soul of those sucked in by their heresies. 

Babylon is the great whore, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations in all the earth.  Being the Mother means she has children, and oh, this woman has many.  She has had fornication with all the kings of the earth, and has borne many sons and daughters, all of whom have taken on the characteristics of this dominant and powerful woman.  They are all whores or whoremongers, and there is no end to their children.  Like their mother, they seek out the unsuspecting soul, and fill them with the fire emanating from their bosoms, and seduce them till all life has left their body.  Spent, they can’t resist any of her gentlest of urges, and allow themselves to be seduced over and over again with all their depraved lover’s desires.  But, this is not a new phenomenon; no, not at all.  This all began 6000 years ago just out of the garden of Eden in a little land called Shinar.  Shinar is the place of the Chaldeans, a cultic people, and was to take on the name of Babylon in the days of Nebuchadnezzar, and in modern times is also the Iraq of the middle east.  Shortly after God destroyed the entire earth with a flood in the days of Noah to rid the land of evil, Noah, on disembarking the ark began to have children.  One of those was Ham who begat Cush who begat Nimrod.  There was only one generation between righteous Noah and wicked Nimrod before evil began to raise its ugly head.  Nimrod, whose name means rebellion began his kingdom in Babel which is also Babylon.  Here he, it was believed, built a city and a tower in Shinar that it might reach into the heavens to make a name for themselves.  The first religious ediface Nimrod built to reach to God became the first building to defy God.  God seeing their plan, confounded their language, and thwarted their plans to overthrow his kingdom, and caused them to lay off building their tower and city.  This should make us wonder today how much is built for God and how much is built for man that he might make a name for himself.  Apparently, men’s desires to build a type of temple to God was continually fulfilled even in Abraham’s day.  Several places in scripture put a “temple of the gods” in the days of Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, Darius, and others in the land of Shinar.  Nevertheless, mixed religion, false religion, and cultic religion abounded in the days of Abraham.  God’s call to Abraham was to get out of your country, get out from his kindred and get out from your father’s house.  Obviously, they were all given over to idolatry and the worship of a plentitude of gods.  God’s plan for Abraham was to bless him and multiply him if he would come out, and go to a place God directed.  After coming out of Ur, Abraham went into the land of promise, and the only thing he built was an altar of stones for remembrance, and he pitched his tent to live in.  Abraham’s promise was to possess the land, and his seed was to be as the stars of heaven and the sand of the seashore.  Abraham simply believed this, and it was accounted to him as righteousness.  He never had a city planning meeting, he never discussed zoning, he never got an architect to design him some plans, he never engaged a contractor, and he never built a building.  For the promise to have sons as the stars of the sky and as the sand of the seashore came from God who is exponentially increasing souls even this very day by his Spirit.  Not trying to be simplistic, but the great tabernacle of Moses, the tabernacle of David and the hallowed temple of Solomon no longer exist today though they were built for God to dwell in.  God told David, the heavens and the earth cannot contain me, so you can’t build me a house to dwell in, but I will build you a house.   So here we are today, we cannot build God a house that he would be pleased in.  But he is rebuilding the Tabernacle of David, the true church, the temple of God of which you are.  Whether the building is made of the skins of animals, bricks, stone, ornate metals of gold or silver, and all its tables and utensils, it is all in vain.  The days of the crystal cathedrals are over for God is looking for a house of flesh, in whom he can put the treasure of himself  into our earthen vessels.  And it shall increase just as he told Abraham as the sands of the seashore and the stars of the heavens. 

Now, what about the mystery whore, the scarlet woman of Babylon?  Why, she is alive and well today.  Many have believed it is the Catholic Church out of which the supposed anti-christ is to come, because of its ornate papacy, priests in purple and scarlet and churches throughout the world with all its buildings decorated with much gold;  some think it is the nation of Islam from which the so called prophet Mohammed came to proclaim Allah as god worshipping five times a day toward Mecca and the site of the Dome of the Rock and all its splendor;  or some believe it is the Taj-Mahal built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage".  It was said of the Taj Mahal:  “Should the guilty seek asylum here, Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin. Should a sinner make his way to this mansion, All his past sins are to be washed away.  The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs;  And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes.  In this world this edifice has been made;  To display thereby the creator's glory.”   Though these are great words, a cold dark, yet greatly ornate mausoleum made for dead men’s bones can’t forgive sins no matter how much one stares at it.  Sadly, throughout the world men have worshipped buildings more than God, and ascribed miracles of forgiveness and healing  and deliverance to those who enter its presence.  Solomon made a great prayer to God that all who entered his Temple would be forgiven their sins.  Alas, Solomon’s temple like all the others no longer exist.  So now, where does one go to get forgiveness?  Ah, maybe it is the church!  Oh, don’t let your grief and condemnation fall on a Monday or a Tuesday or any of the other days of the week except one hour on Sunday and maybe Wednesday, for the doors are locked, you cannot get your forgiveness, your guilt remains, and the condemnation that plagues your soul is still ever with you.  The building that you sought out to forgive your sins is out of commission, closed to the passerby and the stranger, and even to its own.  No amount of money you pay can get you in.  The caretaker has the key, and even if you could get in, where would you go?  The altar?  There is no ark there, the Shekinah glory is gone, the power has lifted, and there is no priest to make a sacrifice for your sins. 

Let’s suppose we manage to get into one of these modern day temples shining with all its jewels, built with the best architecture, with the images of angels on every window, and statues of the saints in every corner.  It is so holy;  why even the Lord Jesus is on a cross above the podium.  Moses had such a symbol.  After grumbling and complaining in the wilderness, God sent serpents to bite and kill the people.  As they began to cry out to God and to Moses, God instructed him to build a pole with a brazen serpent on it.  When the people looked upon the serpent, they would be healed, and so they were.  However, as the mind of men go, they soon began to turn the glory of God into a stick with a hand made brazen serpent.  Idolatry became the worship of the religious ones, and that pole which was once ordained to life became a stumbling block as the people worshipped it more than God, and brought upon themselves death.  God said to Moses, Leviticus 19: 4 Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God.  For all this, they still would not hear. 

In Zechariah 5, God depicts a flying scroll to the prophet which is the covenant of the Lord of Life and Death;   It was Life if Israel obeyed the word, and death if they did not.  And the scroll which was God’s commandments would go into every home.  If the occupant was a thief or a liar, then destruction came upon them and their entire house.  Then God sends two storks, unclean birds which were forbidden to be eaten by a righteous Jew to carry an ephah which had a woman in its midst into the land of Shinar and set up its base, and to set up its house.  In the study of the Torah, keen students found long ago that this bird was so kind and passionate, so why  should it be listed among the unclean fowl. After all, it commonly is assumed that each animal that is prohibited to be eaten is representative of some undesirable character trait. Here is a bird which deserves to be called, pious one. So, why should it be considered unclean? One student suggested that the problem with the stork is that, although she is kind, she is kind only to her friends. She shows compassion only for other members of her own species. To those who are not her friends, but belong to a different species, she is indifferent and, often, even cruel.  This unclean bird is representative of the church today respecting only those within the church, and not considering those outside the church who may need salvation.  As the saying goes, Us four and no more.    Oh, the woman, the woman, who is this mystery woman that the stork bears on its wings?  Why, it can be none other than the great whore who has come to build a religion and its accompanying buildings along with her damnable doctrines in the middle of the land of Shinar the same place God told Abraham to leave.  She has come to bring mixture.  God has forbidden mixture in Leviticus 19:19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.  These are simply shadows and types of mixture today that one can find in most any church in the world no matter the denomination.  One can’t cross breed mysticism with Christianity, light with dark, drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils, nor can one plant the pure seed of the word with the tares in a field.  One can’t go into the temple like a priest in the house of God with much labor and extreme emotionalism, but rather he must find that place of rest in the Holy of Holies.  Churches today are trying to appeal to everyone.  Why they are finding unity with Christian and Muslim, heterosexual and homosexual, the world’s pleasures and the Lord’s purity.  One cannot help but wonder, “Is God pleased with all this mixture?”  Come out from among them he says, and be ye separate, and I will be your God, and you shall be my sons and daughters.  That mystery woman is still at work beguiling unstable souls, training them to drink the low dose of poison in the wine glass, slowly taking their soul away with their damnable doctrines, and layering the pure word of God  mixed with the wisdom of the world.  This woman is not who is commonly believed;  no, it is not Catholicism, it is not Islam, it is not Hindu, it is not Bahai, it is not Protestanism, it is not any other religion or cult, but it is mixture of the unclean, impure, unholy, and the ungodly, which have permeated throughout the entire earth on every nation, every ocean, every continent, and every people who embrace her seductive ways.  This woman is spiritual, she is cunning, she comes as an angel of light and makes one believe anything she says with that soft whisper, those fluffy sermons, those rhetorical teachings, with their flaming evangelists, and their false prophets who all come to suck the life out of those unsuspecting souls who run after wind of doctrine.  The speak of their religion as if it were god.  They elevate their preachers like movie stars.  They can their sermons, put them on disks and tapes and sell their perversions to multitudes.  The house of prayer has become a merchant house and is odious to the Lord. 

What is one to do when that evil seductress raises her head?  Like Joseph, when Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him, run; run.  Run, my friend, run.  Don’t let her get her evil claws in your soul.  She has no part in you.  Do you not know that he who is seduced by a harlot becomes one with that harlot.  Mystery Babylon, that great whore throughout the ages is still trying to build her church.  If she can compromise you, she can make you ineffective in all you do.  This is why God hates her;  she is the antithesis to the pure engrafted word, she takes no hostages, she leaves a wake of destruction in her path, and all that go into her are defiled.  But, rejoice, all ye saints of God, for an Angel comes down from heaven having great power and the earth was lightened with his glory, And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen.  Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.  And a mighty Angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.  Revelation 18:20-21.  For true and righteous are his judgments:  for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.  And again they said, Alleluia, And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.  Revelation 19:2,3.  For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested to destroy the works of the devil.  Oh, the mystery of it all!
